Jacksonville Honors Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar with ‘Peace and Wellness Day’ Proclamation

JACKSONVILLE, FL — On June 16, 2025, the City of Jacksonville officially declared the day as Sri Sri Ravi Shankar Peace and Wellness Day, recognizing the global spiritual leaders extensive contributions to peace, humanitarian efforts, and community well-being. Mayor Donna Deegan presented the proclamation during a public ceremony at the University of North Florida, marking Jacksonville as the 32nd city worldwide to honor Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar in this manner.

The proclamation acknowledges Gurudevs lifelong dedication to promoting inner well-being and societal harmony through initiatives like The Art of Living Foundation. Established in 1981, the foundation has reached over 180 countries, offering programs in mindfulness, breathing techniques, and service leadership that foster mental, emotional, and civic well-being. These efforts align with Jacksonvilles commitment to fostering a community rooted in dignity, compassion, and belonging for all people.

Gurudevs visit to Jacksonville included a special event titled Journey Within: An Evening of Meditation & Wisdom, held at the University of North Floridas Robinson Theater. The event featured guided meditation and discussions on ancient techniques for contemporary life, aiming to help individuals manage stress and cultivate inner peace. This program was part of Gurudevs multi-city U.S. tour, emphasizing the importance of mental health and wellness in todays fast-paced world.

Beyond his work with The Art of Living Foundation, Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar has been instrumental in global peace initiatives. He has mediated and progressed peace negotiations in conflict-stricken areas such as Sri Lanka, Iraq, Venezuela, and Colombia, where he played a central role in ending the 52-year conflict between FARC and the Colombian government. His efforts have earned him numerous accolades, including the Padma Vibhushan, Indias second-highest civilian award.

The recognition by the City of Jacksonville not only honors Gurudevs global impact but also highlights the citys dedication to promoting peace and wellness within its own community. By aligning with Gurudevs mission, Jacksonville joins a growing number of cities worldwide that acknowledge the vital role of spiritual and cultural leaders in advancing societal harmony and individual well-being.
