During Fair Housing Month, the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) proudly recognized three outstanding individuals with the prestigious Fair Housing Champion Awards. This annual honor highlights REALTORS® who have made significant contributions toward expanding access to homeownership and promoting fair housing practices across the country. The 2023 recipients—Abra Barnes, Sofia Crisp, and Frank J. Williams—were selected for their exceptional commitment to creating inclusive housing markets and their tireless efforts to ensure equal opportunities for all individuals, regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, disability, or familial status.

As advocates for fair housing, these recipients have gone above and beyond in their efforts to address disparities in the housing market and promote equal access to homeownership for historically underrepresented groups. Their work serves as an inspiration to fellow REALTORS® and communities nationwide, emphasizing the importance of equity in housing.

Abra Barnes: Empowering Communities through Education and Advocacy

Abra Barnes has been a leader in educating homebuyers and real estate professionals about the importance of fair housing laws and policies. Through her educational programs, she has helped empower individuals in marginalized communities with the knowledge and tools they need to navigate the often complex home-buying process. Her commitment to creating inclusive spaces extends beyond her work in real estate; she actively advocates for policies that promote affordable housing and works to break down barriers that prevent certain groups from accessing homeownership. Barnes’ leadership in these efforts has made a profound impact in her local community and continues to inspire others in the industry.

Sofia Crisp: Championing Policy Changes for Housing Equality

Sofia Crisp has made significant strides in influencing policy changes that promote housing equality. Through her advocacy work, she has been at the forefront of efforts to push for legislative reforms aimed at combating discriminatory housing practices. Crisp’s passion for equitable housing opportunities is evident in her dedication to changing the narrative around homeownership. She works closely with local and state lawmakers to ensure that fair housing regulations are not only upheld but strengthened, thereby providing lasting benefits for marginalized communities. Her tireless work has helped increase awareness of the systemic issues faced by minority groups in the housing market and has led to tangible improvements in housing accessibility.

Frank J. Williams: Driving Change through Community Engagement

Frank J. Williams has dedicated much of his career to building stronger, more inclusive communities. By focusing on community outreach and engagement, Williams has worked directly with local organizations, schools, and residents to increase awareness about the importance of fair housing. He has led numerous initiatives aimed at helping first-time homebuyers, particularly in underserved neighborhoods, gain access to affordable housing options. Through his grassroots efforts, Williams has not only improved the lives of individuals seeking homeownership but has also fostered a culture of inclusivity in real estate practices. His dedication to ensuring that housing opportunities are accessible to everyone, regardless of background or economic status, has made a significant difference in his community.

A Commitment to Equal Opportunity

The work of these three Fair Housing Champions serves as a reminder of the ongoing need to ensure equal access to housing opportunities for all. As the housing market continues to evolve, it remains crucial for REALTORS® and industry professionals to actively promote fair housing practices and work toward dismantling the barriers that have long excluded many from homeownership. The National Association of REALTORS® is committed to supporting these efforts and to fostering a more inclusive housing market for future generations.

In recognition of their achievements, Barnes, Crisp, and Williams were celebrated for their unwavering dedication to advancing fair housing and expanding access to homeownership for individuals and families across the United States. Their work is a powerful testament to the significant role REALTORS® play in building a more equitable society.
