US-10 Reopens in Midland County Following Bridge Repairs

On June 2, 2025, the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) officially reopened both directions of US-10 in Midland County, following a brief but critical closure related to bridge repairs near the M-30 overpass in Sanford. The highway had been shut down starting on May 30 after cracking was discovered in the bridge beams during routine inspections earlier in the month. The issue prompted the MDOT to prioritize safety, as the cracking raised concerns about the integrity of the bridge structure.

The westbound lanes of US-10 were the first to reopen on Monday morning, with the eastbound lanes following by the afternoon. This reopening marked a significant milestone in the repair efforts, as traffic in both directions now has two lanes available. While the highway itself has been restored to partial normalcy, the M-30 bridge remains closed as part of ongoing repair work related to a $7.3 million structural improvement project. The improvements are necessary to maintain the bridge’s long-term safety and usability.

In the meantime, M-30 traffic is being rerouted, with detours in place to guide drivers safely around the construction zone. Southbound M-30 traffic is being diverted onto westbound US-10, followed by a turn south onto W. River Road, and then eastbound US-10. Northbound M-30 drivers will be rerouted via eastbound US-10, followed by a turn north onto Stark Road, before rejoining westbound US-10.

The closure had significant impact on local commuters and commercial traffic alike. For the last few days of May and the first part of June, drivers in the region were forced to adjust their travel plans, navigating around the detours in place. Local businesses along the affected routes saw a decrease in foot traffic, while residents voiced concerns about longer travel times. However, the completion of the bridge repairs and the subsequent reopening of US-10 offers a sigh of relief to those who rely on the road for daily commuting and transporting goods.

MDOT’s timely work and coordination with local authorities ensured that both safety and efficiency were prioritized throughout the project. Though the M-30 bridge remains closed for now, the structural improvements will undoubtedly increase the durability and reliability of the bridge for years to come. The project is part of Michigan’s broader effort to maintain and improve the state’s aging infrastructure, as the demand for safe and reliable transportation routes continues to grow.

While the reopening of US-10 brings much-needed relief to commuters, attention remains focused on the completion of the M-30 bridge’s repairs. The department of transportation has assured the public that the work is progressing according to schedule, with expected completion and full reopening slated for later in the summer. As the construction continues, MDOT officials are encouraging drivers to stay informed about ongoing traffic updates and potential further detours.
