JetZero to Invest $4.7 Billion in North Carolina Manufacturing Plant, Creating Over 14,500 Jobs

JetZero, a California-based aerospace startup, has announced plans to invest $4.7 billion in constructing its first manufacturing facility near Piedmont Triad International Airport (PTI) in Greensboro, North Carolina. This significant investment is projected to create more than 14,500 jobs over the next decade, marking the largest job commitment in North Carolina’s history .

The new facility will produce JetZero’s innovative Z4 aircraft, a blended-wing-body (BWB) design that promises up to 50% greater fuel efficiency compared to traditional tube-and-wing airliners. The Z4 is designed to seat approximately 250 passengers and aims to enter commercial service in the early 2030s. At full production, the plant is expected to manufacture up to 20 aircraft per month .

JetZero’s decision to establish its manufacturing hub in Greensboro was influenced by North Carolina’s robust aerospace industry, skilled workforce, and supportive infrastructure. Governor Josh Stein highlighted the state’s aviation heritage, stating, “North Carolina was first in flight. We are also the future of flight.” The state has committed over $1 billion in performance-based incentives, including tax withholdings and infrastructure improvements, to support the project .

The company has already secured approximately $300 million in investments for the Z4 project, including a grant from the U.S. Air Force to develop and fly a demonstrator model by 2027. Major airlines such as United Airlines and Alaska Airlines have also invested in JetZero and placed conditional purchase agreements for the Z4 aircraft .

JetZero’s move to North Carolina is expected to have a substantial impact on the state’s economy, not only through job creation but also by attracting suppliers and ancillary services. The average salary for the new positions is projected to be over $89,000, significantly higher than the current average in Guilford County .

The company’s commitment to innovation extends beyond manufacturing. JetZero plans to establish a state-of-the-art research and development center for composite structures at the Greensboro site. This facility will focus on advancing high-performance composite materials and manufacturing methods, further solidifying North Carolina’s position as a leader in aerospace technology .

With this investment, JetZero joins other aerospace firms expanding in the U.S. South, drawn by strong demand for aircraft and comparatively lower production costs. The company’s presence is expected to bolster the region’s growing reputation as an aerospace hub, complementing existing operations by companies like HondaJet and Boom Supersonic at PTI .

JetZero’s ambitious project represents a significant milestone in the evolution of commercial aviation, promising to deliver more efficient and environmentally friendly aircraft while providing a substantial economic boost to North Carolina.
