Manufacturing Boom in North Carolina Sparks 1,200 New Jobs

Jabil, a global contract manufacturer, has unveiled a substantial $150 million expansion of its Raleigh facility. The initiative is designed to meet surging demand in clean energy and aerospace sectors. According to the company, this project will generate nearly 1,200 new roles across precision engineering, assembly, and supply chain logistics—bolstering both local and national manufacturing efforts.

Jabil’s expansion aligns with a broader corporate strategy to diversify the company’s U.S. supply chain footprint, mitigating vulnerabilities exposed during the pandemic. The company cited rising demand for high-tech components—especially in renewable energy systems and aerospace—as a driving force behind the decision.

This announcement follows a wave of clean-sector investments across North Carolina. Federal data shows the state has attracted over $9 billion in clean energy-related investments in the past year, yielding more than 4,100 new jobs. The Carolina surge reflects a larger national trend, propelled by provisions under the Inflation Reduction Act and other federal incentives.

Local leaders in Wake County praised the expansion as a catalyst for regional growth. “This investment fuels our workforce and reinforces our standing as a high-tech manufacturing hub,” said a spokesperson for the Wake County Economic Development Board. Experts anticipate ripple effects in housing, retail, and logistics sectors.

Historically, investments such as Siemens Energy’s $150 million expansion had supported nearly 560 jobs in Charlotte and Raleigh. Jabil’s announcement builds on this foundation, broadening employment opportunities and supply chain resilience.

Jabil’s move is well-timed. The global market for energy storage systems is forecasted to more than double—from approximately $13 billion in 2027 to trillions—creating demand for high-precision electronics. Jabil’s expertise in battery systems and industrial electronics positions it advantageously to contribute to critical clean energy infrastructure.

Additionally, aerospace manufacturers continue reshoring operations to the U.S. in response to supply chain disruptions and geopolitical shifts. Jabil’s expanded capacity could play a central role in supporting such efforts by providing domestically produced, high-specification components crucial to aircraft and defense systems.

Reviewing North Carolina’s broader landscape, the state has become a national leader in clean energy manufacturing. The Department of Energy reports 24 clean energy manufacturing announcements statewide, totaling over $9 billion. Projects span battery plants, EV chargers, solar inputs, and silicon carbide components for EVs—creating a robust projects pipeline.

Tax incentives and grants—such as those under the 48C Advanced Energy Project Credit—have lured firms like Siemens, which expanded transformer manufacturing in Charlotte and Raleigh, adding nearly 500 jobs. Federal measures enacted via the Inflation Reduction Act continue to nurture a long-term shift toward domestic clean tech capacity.

Creating approximately 1,200 roles, Jabil’s expansion will stimulate demand for skilled trades, engineering technicians, and logistics personnel. Wake County officials emphasize that ongoing workforce development programs—including those at Wake Tech and regional universities—are aligning curricula to meet employer needs.

More jobs often translate into increased demand for housing, food services, retail, and transportation. Local real estate markets have already seen moderate upticks due to previous expansions like Siemens Energy’s. This boost may also encourage improvements in infrastructure and public services.

By boosting domestic output of clean energy and aerospace components, North Carolina firms like Jabil reinforce supply chain resilience—critical as the U.S. shifts global strategy toward curbing dependence on foreign operations.

North Carolina’s emergence parallels a nationwide reshoring trend. In just one year post-IRA, U.S. clean energy and EV project investments topped 170,000 jobs and $278 billion across 44 states. The ongoing clean energy momentum has also sparked expanded battery, solar, and EV component manufacturing capacity—with several new gigafactories and solar assembly plants announced across the Southeast.

Policy incentives continue to incentivize reshoring. The DOE’s Investing in America initiative shows North Carolina with 24 major clean energy manufacturing announcements totaling $9 billion. Maintaining these incentives remains critical for sustaining such economic growth.

Both public and private sectors are expanding efforts in training and community investment. Educational leaders are partnering with clean tech and aerospace manufacturers to prepare a skilled workforce. This underscores a holistic economic development model, grounded in education, industry collaboration, and strategic public investment.

Jabil’s $150 million expansion and 1,200 new jobs represent more than corporate growth—they form part of a broader economic shift in North Carolina and nationwide. Supported by federal policy, private investment, and proactive workforce development, the initiative signals a hopeful trajectory toward secure, high-tech manufacturing rooted in clean energy and aerospace. As similar projects continue across the region, North Carolina stands at the heart of America’s manufacturing resurgence.
