Mary Tyler Moore’s Iconic Connecticut Estate Finds a New Owner

A notable estate in Greenwich, Connecticut, once home to the legendary actress Mary Tyler Moore, has recently been sold following an extended listing period. Initially placed on the market in September 2022 for $22 million, the property ultimately fetched $16.9 million, a reduction aligning with its later asking price.

Sale Insights and Representation

The sale was handled by Helene Barre and Fran Ehrlich from Sotheby’s International Realty—Greenwich Brokerage, representing the buyer. Joseph Barbieri from the same brokerage managed the sale on behalf of Dr. S. Robert Levine, Moore’s husband.

“It was an honor to represent this remarkable property, once home to a beloved TV icon,” Barbieri commented regarding the transaction. He expressed satisfaction with the sale’s outcome.

Property Overview

This Georgian Colonial estate, which the couple acquired for approximately $10 million in 2006, boasts an impressive layout. Spanning nearly 14,000 square feet, the residence features five bedrooms and nine bathrooms set within an expansive seven-acre landscape.

Created over a century ago, the property was modernized under the guidance of architect Stephen Wang, showcasing sophisticated details such as:

  • A stunning double-height solarium adorned with stained glass sourced from various churches and synagogues.
  • A dedicated laundry area complete with a dog shower and grooming station.
  • A fully-equipped gym and a relaxing spa.
  • A grand foyer leading to harlequin-patterned floors and a wood-paneled billiards room and library.
  • A spectacular primary suite that spans 2,000 square feet, featuring dual bathrooms and expansive walk-in closets.

Amenities and Landscape

The estate offers various amenities, thanks to the expertise of landscape architect Janice Parker. Among the highlights are:

  • A guest apartment situated above the three-car garage.
  • A luxurious 65-foot swimming pool fitted with its own fireplace.
  • A serene pond and five acres dedicated to conservation land.

Legacy of Mary Tyler Moore

Mary Tyler Moore, a celebrated television actress, passed away in 2017 at the age of 80 after battling pneumonia, as reported by The New York Times. Married to Levine since 1983, the couple frequently divided their time between Greenwich and Manhattan. Following Moore’s death, Levine expressed his intent to sell the property as a step toward moving forward. He noted that a portion of the sale proceeds would benefit the Mary Tyler Moore Vision Initiative, an organization focused on vision research for diabetes patients.
