J.J. Spaun Leads After First Round at 2025 U.S. Open at Oakmont

The 2025 U.S. Open, the 125th edition of this prestigious golf tournament, has officially begun at Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pennsylvania, with J.J. Spaun leading the field after an impressive first round. Spaun, who is looking for his breakthrough major win, shot a round of 66, one stroke ahead of South Africa’s Thriston Lawrence. This marks an exciting start to a tournament held at one of the most demanding golf courses in the world.

Oakmont, known for its punishing layout and challenging conditions, has long been a staple of major championship golf. The course is famous for its sharply sloping greens, deep and numerous bunkers, and, of course, the notorious Church Pew Bunker, which stands as one of the most difficult hazards on the course. With its unique characteristics, Oakmont is renowned for testing even the most experienced professionals, and this year’s U.S. Open promises to be no different.

Spaun’s first-round 66 puts him in an enviable position, although the competition remains fierce. Just behind him is Thriston Lawrence, who posted a 67 and is determined to challenge for the title. Among the other top contenders are the likes of Jon Rahm, Collin Morikawa, and Xander Schauffele, all of whom have proven to be strong performers in major tournaments. Rahm, who won the 2021 U.S. Open, is particularly focused on making a push for his second career major title, while Morikawa and Schauffele have been consistent challengers in recent years.

Weather conditions at Oakmont have been favorable so far, with the players experiencing warm and sunny conditions on Thursday. However, forecasts predict thunderstorms may disrupt play over the weekend, potentially impacting the tournament’s flow. As players battle both the challenging course and unpredictable weather, the stakes are high for those looking to claim victory in one of golf’s most iconic events.

Despite the excitement surrounding this year’s tournament, one notable absence is that of golf legend Tiger Woods. Woods, who has been a fixture at the U.S. Open for many years, is sitting out this year’s event as he continues his recovery from Achilles surgery. The 15-time major champion has faced a challenging recovery process but remains hopeful for a return to competitive golf in the near future. His absence marks a significant shift in the dynamics of the tournament, as fans and players alike are accustomed to seeing Woods as a strong contender in these high-stakes events.

The 2025 U.S. Open features 156 of the world’s best golfers, all vying for the title and the chance to etch their name in history. As the tournament unfolds, fans will be eagerly watching the leaders to see if Spaun can maintain his early momentum or if one of the other top players can rise to the occasion and capture the championship. With intense competition, the challenge of Oakmont, and the unpredictable weather, the U.S. Open is set to provide plenty of drama and excitement throughout the weekend.

For those unable to attend in person, the tournament is being broadcast live via talkSPORT and Sky Sports Golf, ensuring fans around the world can follow the action in real time.
