NextProp Plans Soccer Team in Albany by 2026
A New Era for Albany’s Sports Scene
NextProp, a developmental league linked with Major League Soccer (MLS), is targeting the establishment of a soccer team in Albany, New York, by 2026. This initiative aligns with the excitement surrounding the upcoming soccer World Cup, set to be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Ownership and Investment
The yet-to-be-named soccer franchise will be led by Ed and Lisa Mitzen, founders of Business for Good, along with a consortium of investors that includes notable real estate developers Jeff Buell and Chris Spraragen.
Development Plans Unveiled
During a recent meeting with local officials, MLS executives announced ambitious plans for a $300 million entertainment district adjacent to the proposed stadium site. This development will include hotels, dining establishments, and residential complexes situated on a nine-acre parcel in the Liberty Square neighborhood.
Quote from NextProp Leadership
“The Capital Region has been on our radar for some time,” stated Charles Altchek, president of NextProp and an executive vice president at MLS. “From a market perspective, we didn’t have to be convinced.”
Funding and Support
While team officials acknowledged that they would seek state financial support, they stressed that the majority of the funding will come from private investors, reflecting a significant commitment to the project.
Community Impact and Engagement
Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan hailed the proposal as a “once-in-a-generation, transformational opportunity” for the Liberty Square area. She expressed her unwavering support, stating, “I will do everything in my power to help make this a reality.”
Architectural Plans
Initial designs and layouts for the stadium district have been developed by Reform Architecture, based in Schenectady. In addition, discussions are ongoing with Populous, the architectural firm known for designing the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, regarding the construction of a versatile stadium in Albany that allows for expandable seating.
Event Scheduling and Community Use
Beyond hosting soccer matches, the new venue aims to accommodate concerts and various events that are not suitable for larger venues like MVP Arena or the Saratoga Performing Arts Center. The NextProp league anticipates a competitive schedule featuring 28 games in 2026, with 14 home matchups.
